Only
fifteen years ago, very few golfers, or golf professionals
believed that a fitness program could help a person to play
better golf. Even well respected professionals like Gary Player,
who publicized the advantages of staying fit were thought
about as the exception, rather than the rule. All of that
changed in 1996 when Tiger Woods burst onto the scene. Now,
ten years later, the entire golfing industry has fully embraced
the golf fitness concept!
So now that golfers know why physical fitness
is vital to playing great golf, the essential question now
is: How do I get Golf Fit?
Evaluation
Our golf fitness program starts with a comprehensive
evaluation, based on research that has been done since 1995,
at the Titleist
Performance Institute (TPI) in San Diego, California.
This evaluation includes about twenty-five ‘golf specific’
tests to look at a golfer’s flexibility, rotational
mobility, core stability, strength, posture, spinal range
of motion and other physical characteristics that have been
proven to be critical to the golf swing.
Program Development
Once the evaluation is completed our therapists
use this information along with your goals, medical history
and workout experience, to develop a customized program. Your
first visit will be approximately 1-1/2 hours long. This includes
the comprehensive evaluation, exercise instruction and discussion
with your therapist to design a plan that fits your needs
and schedule.
Exercise Instruction
While the recommended frequency and duration
of exercise sessions will depend on findings from your evaluation,
a typical program will start with 1 to 2 exercise sessions
per week. The frequency of exercise sessions will often gradually
diminish, as the client becomes more independent with their
program.
Specht Physical Therapy is leading the
way in developing this golf fitness program that takes advantage
of the research done at TPI over the years and Greg Specht
has been recognized as an Authorized
Golf Fitness Provider by the Titleist Performance Institute.
